Um bairro boêmio e musical como o Benfica merece ter uma homenagem a um dos maiores artistas do estado como Belchior. Foi pensando assim que o empresário Tárcio Lira, dono do bar e restaurante Paraíba Raiz, em frente a Praça João Gentil, no Benfica, decidiu realizar um investimento em arte urbana que trouxe beleza para a casa noturna e para o bairro de Fortaleza. Para isso, Tárcio contratou os serviços de um dos artistas urbanos
mais importantes do Ceará: o grafiteiro, muralista e produtor cultural Wesley Rocha. Artista visual, ele nasceu no bairro do Bom Jardim e conquistou o mundo com sua arte. Autodidata, iniciou sua trajetória artística em 1999, desenvolvendo faixas para torcidas de futebol, utilizando o  aerógrafo como instrumento. Antes disso, observava o pai, José Sérgio Magalhães da Rocha, pintor imobiliário e funileiro, com quem teve o primeiro contato com tintas e pincéis.

“Pintar o Belchior para mim é único, sempre. Sua obra me deixa impactado sua poética é atemporal. Quando eu conversei com o Tárcio sobre qual seria a arte, o Belchior foi a primeira imagem que veio. Foi simultaneamente a confirmação, Tarcio me falou que ele já morou na região quando estava na universidade, é que já havia pensado no Belchior”, afirma o artista sobre a escolha do tema. “O Benfica não é somente um bairro boêmio, mais sim, um bairro onde é ponto de encontros de grandes artistas. No período que estava produzindo o mural conversando com muitos artistas que passavam para me cumprimentar, ouvi muitas histórias de como o bairro sempre foi ponto de encontro dos músicos e poetas do Ceará. É claro que o Benfica ainda continua respirando cultura”, afirmou Wesley, que terminou a pintura na segunda, 27/02.

“O Paraiba Bar movimenta e resgata o bairro com suas atividades culturais e movimentando e impactando positivamente o bairro em todos os sentidos. O mural do Belchior é um presente meu e do Paraíba para que tudo que o Benfica representa para cidade de Fortaleza. Desde 2005, Wesley mora em São Paulo (SP), aonde se familiarizou com as técnicas do grafitti e se transformou em um muralista que realiza trabalhos realistas em grandes dimensões com temáticas brasileiras que dão visibilidade às populações indígenas, negras, mestiças e nordestinas. Sua produção artística está presente nas cidades de Fortaleza, Paracuru, São Gonçalo do Amarante, Canoa Quebrada, Jericoacoara e Sobral, no Ceará, Guarulhos, Araçoiaba da Serra, na capital de São Paulo, Teresina/PI e ainda em países como Portugal, Londres e Suíça.

No Ceará, foi idealizador e curador da mostra de graffiti “Águas do Nordeste“, uma parceria com a Companhia de Gestão de Recursos Hídricos (COGERH), evento que movimenta em torno de 50 artistas, com apoio da Central Única das Favelas (CUFA), entidades na qual atua como articulador cultural na região Nordeste. Também no estado, idealizou o projeto “História Viva”, em parceria com o Governo do Estado do Ceará e o Metrô de Fortaleza (METROFOR), para criação de painéis artísticos nas comunidades próximas às estações.

Entre as personalidades já retratadas pelas mãos de Wesley, estão o cantor Belchior, o pescador mestre Jerônimo, personagem histórico do bairro do Mucuripe, em Fortaleza, Padre Cícero, o músico Patativa do Assaré e o educador cearense Paulo Freire, os dois últimos imortalizados na Universidade Estadual do Ceará (Uece). Os personagens escolhidos, geralmente, são autênticos e próximos das pessoas simples das cidades, para maior identificação. Ele também desenvolve pinturas em telas e ambientes internos, na área de decoração de interiores.

O Paraíba Raiz mantém uma programação musical diversificada com diversos artistas de Fortaleza, nos mais variados gêneros, que vai do Chorinho ao Rock, passando pelo sertanejo e outros ritmos.
