Pesquisa mostra maior cobrança por ações climáticas no Brasil enquanto Caatinga enfrenta avanço da desertificação e eventos extremos

No Dia da Caatinga, celebrado em 28 de abril, cresce entre os brasileiros a percepção de que é preciso avançar no combate às mudanças climáticas. Pesquisa recente do Instituto Ipsos, divulgada na última quarta-feira (22), revela que 71% dos brasileiros acreditam que o país precisa intensificar as ações de combate às mudanças climáticas, percentual acima da média mundial, que é de 59%. O levantamento mostra ainda que entre os nascidos de 1946 a 1964, o índice de concordância chega a 77%. Já entre a geração nascida de 1997 a 2012, fica em 67%. O estudo também aponta que 75% das mulheres defendem mais iniciativas do país na área, frente a 66% dos homens.

O relatório indica ainda que a disposição individual para agir contra as mudanças climáticas vem caindo desde 2021 nos países analisados. Segundo os pesquisadores, isso não aponta desinteresse, mas uma mudança de postura, com maior expectativa de que governos e empresas assumam protagonismo, refletindo mais cansaço do que indiferença da população.

Esse cenário se reflete de forma direta na Caatinga, único bioma exclusivamente brasileiro, que já sente os efeitos das mudanças climáticas de maneira intensificada. A perda de vegetação nativa e as queimadas ampliam as emissões de carbono e alteram o microclima, agravando a escassez de água em uma região naturalmente semiárida. Como consequência, aumentam os riscos de desertificação, comprometendo a produção de alimentos, a disponibilidade hídrica e a permanência das populações no campo.

As projeções indicam um cenário mais extremo, com redução dos níveis de reservatórios, chuvas irregulares e concentradas, longos períodos de seca e maior frequência de ondas de calor. Hoje, cerca de 62% da Caatinga já é suscetível à desertificação, processo associado tanto às mudanças climáticas quanto ao uso inadequado do solo, como desmatamento e práticas agropecuárias intensivas, segundo o Ministério do Meio Ambiente e Mudança do Clima.

Diante desse contexto, iniciativas de conservação e adaptação climática ganham ainda mais relevância. Desde 1998, a Associação Caatinga atua na proteção do bioma e no fortalecimento de comunidades locais, promovendo ações que integram conservação ambiental e desenvolvimento sustentável. Entre os resultados, estão a restauração de mais de 260 hectares com espécies nativas e o apoio à criação de áreas protegidas que somam mais de 105 mil hectares.

A atuação também inclui a disseminação de tecnologias sociais adaptadas ao semiárido, como cisternas de placas e soluções de reaproveitamento de água, a exemplo do sistema Bioágua. Além disso, são realizadas capacitações voltadas ao uso e manejo dessas tecnologias sociais, somadas a ações de educação ambiental junto às famílias. Essas iniciativas contribuem para reduzir a pressão sobre os recursos naturais e ampliar a resiliência das comunidades frente às mudanças climáticas.

Mais do que preservar a biodiversidade, proteger a Caatinga significa garantir água, alimento e qualidade de vida para milhões de pessoas. No Dia da Caatinga, o alerta se renova para a urgência de ações integradas que aliem ciência, políticas públicas e participação social na defesa de um dos biomas mais estratégicos e ameaçados do país, afirma Marília Nascimento, gerente de programas socioambientais da Associação Caatinga.

A Caatinga é o bioma que predomina no Nordeste do Brasil, inserido no contexto do clima semiárido. Seu nome vem do tupi-guarani — caa (mata) e tinga (branca) — e significa “mata branca”. Os povos indígenas a batizaram assim por conta da aparência esbranquiçada que domina a paisagem durante a estação seca, quando a maioria das plantas perde suas folhas e revela os troncos claros. Mas, na estação chuvosa, tudo se transforma. A Caatinga se enche de tons vibrantes de verde, com a rebrota das árvores e o surgimento de novas plantas, revelando toda a sua vitalidade.

A Caatinga é o único bioma exclusivamente brasileiro, ou seja, não existe em nenhum outro lugar do mundo. Sua área total é de 862.818 km² (IBGE, 2019), abrangendo 10% do território nacional e mais da metade da região Nordeste (53%). Ela se estende por nove estados: Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia e o norte de Minas Gerais.

Mais de 28 milhões de pessoas vivem nesse ambiente e se beneficiam diretamente dos seus serviços ecossistêmicos, como a provisão de água, alimentos e matérias-primas, além da regulação do clima, fertilidade do solo, polinização, estocagem de carbono, purificação da água e do ar, e espaços para lazer e cultura.
